jpolycan1 detailkThis is the top half of a large double wedding portrait painted by Frans Hals in 1625. Olycan came from a merchant family and this portrait by Hals serves as one half of a wedding portrait. the other features his wife Aletta Hanemans. In this work, I enjoyed doing one of my first large scale works. these works were two panels tall measuring 57″ x  84″ overall. The opulent black clothing was actually painted fairly quickly. what was time consuming was the lace work on the collar and cuffs. Not so much from the intricacy of it, but the subtlety of layers required to get a fullness and depth. How Hals did this work and with seemingly reckless brushstrokes is beyond me -but then again, that the genius of Frans Hals.
