alettasThis work is based off of Frans Hals wedding portrait of Aletta Hanemans in 1625. She is seen wearing very ornate stomacher of the 17th century. The index finger ring and the fashionable gloves compliment the formality of the attire and her status as a married woman. Hals also painted the companion portrait of Aletta’s husband Jacob Pietersz Olycan, a prosperous merchant. Jacob is shown facing the opposite direction. On this work, I can say it was one of the most difficult paintings I have done. the stomacher involved several layers and took a few weeks. Actually the only part of this painting that went fairly quickly was the burgundy satin fabric -that was it. the rest was slow going. This was the second of my larger scale works at 57″ x 84″.
